Last Week’s One And Done Pick Results

At this point, we are starting to sound like a broken record. For the sixth straight time on the 2024 PGA Tour, a golfer who was at 100-1 or greater odds to win the tournament actually won.

At Phoenix last week, it was Nick Taylor surging down the stretch to beat an even longer shot, 47-year-old Charley Hoffman. Both golfers outlasted bigger names like Scottie Scheffler, Sahith Theegala, and Sam Burns. Taylor was only picked by around 0.1% to 0.2% One And Done pool entries nationwide (that is 1 to 2 of every 1,000 entries), while Hoffman was likely unpicked in most pools.

Our general pick strategy, based on the reduced purse size, was to not use two-time defending champ Scheffler. Entries that picked him got a tied-3rd and $519,200 in winnings, a decent score for most golfers, but one that you can easily exceed with a big hit in a top tournament.

Our top picks focused on Justin Thomas (the most popular public pick), Sam Burns, and Jordan Spieth. Burns matched Scheffler with the third place finish, while the other two finished just behind.

2024 Genesis Invitational Pick Strategy: Purse Info

A first place pick at Riviera will net One And Done pool players $4.0 million, more than the $3.6 million that Jon Rahm got for winning the event last season. Most pools will only include a few events with a bigger purse and first place prize.

It’s the final event on the West Coast swing, and one with plenty of history. The big names tend to do well here (and we’ll talk about a specific correlation below), so it’s going to be a week to look at some of the biggest names in the sport.

Here are some notable highlights for the Genesis Invitational field:

  • Every golfer ranked in our top 30 who is not playing on the LIV Tour is in the Genesis field this week, making for an extremely strong field.
  • This is one of the Signature Events, but a player-hosted one (Tiger Woods, who will be making his debut) so there will be a larger overall Invitational field and a 36-hole cut (top 50 and ties, plus any other players within 10 strokes of leader).
  • The top 10 highest-ranked golfers have mostly strong course history here, and every one except Scottie Scheffler (7th in 2022), Tommy Fleetwood (20th in 2023), and Ludvig Aberg (first time) has at least one top-5 finish in the last five years at Riviera.
  • Veteran Adam Scott had a poor showing last year (65th) but has won this event twice and also has two other top 10 finishes in the last five years.
  • Other than Scott, the only golfer in this field who has actually won the event is Max Homa (2021), since the last two champions and five total past winners are now playing on the LIV Tour.
  • Players that have finished as runner-up at the Genesis include Collin Morikawa, Cameron Young, Tony Finau, Matt Kuchar, Justin Thomas, Keegan Bradley, and Tiger Woods.
