Data Grid Feature Tutorial

The Data Grid shows lots of useful information such as win odds and pick popularity. We walk through some of the detaiils.

The Data Grid, which you can access on the top toolbar within the Survivor Pool Picks product, provides a variety of useful information if you want to drill down into why certain picks are being suggested.

There are two primary views in the Data Grid. In the Week View, you can see lots of current week information. The Week View is the default mode when you first click into the Data Grid. You can also switch to the Season View, which allows you to see future matchups and projections for each team.

Week View

In the Week View, you will find the following columns of information next to each team playing that week (these definitions are also contained at the bottom of the Data Grid chart).

PG Odds

The odds that a team wins its game this week, according to the TeamRankings/PoolGenius computer prediction models.

Market Odds

These are the odds that a team wins its game this week, according to the latest money lines from leading sports books. The market odds simply convert the money line info into a projected winning percentage, that removes the vigorish or juice that the book includes in each moneyline offering.

Money Line

The recent money line odds from the consensus of leading sports books. A money line is essentially the betting market’s implied win odds for a team. The greater the negative number, the more likely the team is to win.

Spread

The recent spread from the consensus of leading sports books. It represents how many points the betting market expects a team will win by, except that negative is an expected win instead of an expected loss.

Popularity

A recent estimate of the percentage of people nationally who are picking the given team in their survivor pool entries this week. It’s derived from data published by large survivor pool hosting sites.

Week “X” EV

A measure of how good a pick is independent of future value. In other words, if your survivor pool was in its last week, you’d want to pick the team with the highest Immediate EV. You can see a more detailed explanation of Expected Value, or EV, in our strategy series. The Data Grid EV assumes a standard rules pool with 100 entries.

Future Value

A measure of what you’re sacrificing if you burn the team in question; the higher the value, the higher the sacrifice compared to holding onto them for possible future use. Assessing future value is both art and science, and there is a decent amount of uncertainty baked into this effort especially early in the year. It typically takes several weeks to get a solid read on the relative performance levels of teams. You can see our strategy article on Future Value for more details. The Data Grid assumes a standard rules pool with 100 entries.

All of the columns within the Data Grid are sortable. The default setting is that teams are displayed in descending order of PG Odds for that week. So if you want to organize and see the list of teams by popularity instead, you can click on the “Popularity” column header. If you want to see which teams have the highest EV for that week, you can click on the EV column header.

Season View

If you want to see projections and the future schedule for each team, you can click on the “Season View” tab just above the Data Grid table.

In this view, you can see projected win odds for teams in all future weeks. Teams with projected win odds above 60% in a particular week will be shaded green, with the highest win odds matchups being more colorful.

Just like with the Data Grid in the Weekly View, the columns in the season view are also sortable. So if you wanted to quickly see who is currently projected to have the highest win odds in Week 8, you could click on that header and teams would be sorted by best win odds that week.

You can also now toggle and also see projected pick popularity and projected EV for future weeks, and these are also sortable.
