Are You Playing the Right Survivor Strategy for Your Pool Size?
The size of your pool, and how many entries are left, are key strategic drivers when it comes to making optimal survivor decisions.

When it comes to survivor pools, size matters. The number of entries you must defeat is one of the biggest strategic considerations to weigh. It has an impact on all of the other factors that have been discussed, from determining how much weight to place on safety (win odds) to influencing how important the far future is when estimating future value.
Chances of Winning and Your Expected Pot Share
Your chances of winning a pool are higher if the pool size is smaller. Your expected pot share at the start of a contest is higher when there are fewer entries involved. If you are in a 20-entry pool, you have a 5% chance of winning the prize at the outset. Compare that to a 1,000-entry pool, where your chances are 0.1% when the contest begins.
Thus, in a smaller pool, you have more to lose — in terms of prize expectation — by taking big chances than you do in a much larger pool where your expectation of victory is very small.
The Expected Length of the Pool
Pool size impacts the expected duration of the pool. Generally speaking, pools with fewer entries should end earlier than pools with lots of entries.
When you look at historical data about how long NFL survivor pools have lasted, by the end of Week 10, on average, less than 5% of all entries are still alive.
In a 20-entry pool, that means the average expectation is for about one entry to be alive. Most standard pools of that size are either decided by that point, or are in the endgame where only a couple of entries remain.
In a 1,000-entry pool, though, with the exact same survival rate, you would expect just under 50 entries to still be alive and competing to win. So 10 weeks into the contest, a 1,000-entry pool would typically still have more entries alive than a 20-entry pool started with in Week 1.
A 20-entry standard pool will typically be decided between Weeks 9 and 13, and have just a handful of entries still alive after Week 5 on average. A 1,000-entry standard pool, on the other hand, would usually be expected to get all the way through Week 18 with at least one — and often more than one — entry surviving.
Different Pool Length = Different Future Value Approach
Because small and large pools have different expected lengths, a cookie-cutter approach to Future Value would not be wise.
For the smaller pool, there should be less emphasis on the later weeks. If a team has high value weeks early in the season but no more high value weeks until the final few weeks, it makes far less sense to save that team for the future in a small pool.
In larger pools that usually get all the way to Week 18, on the other hand, it makes little sense to ignore the future value of teams that could be valuable in the final weeks of the season.
Risk versus Reward Based on Pool Size
Let’s think back to our discussion of expected prize share based on pool size, and how it impacts risk versus reward.
As with a variety of other pools — such as NFL pick’em contests and March Madness pools — size can dictate the acceptable level of risk. The fewer entries there are, the higher the relative risk of a loss. A loss when you have a 10% expectation of winning the prize is costlier than a loss when you are an extreme longshot with a 0.1% chance of winning.
Further, as we discussed when talking about Expected Value, your own pick decision impacts EV. That impact is not uniform across pool sizes. Your selection has a bigger negative impact on EV when the overall number of remaining entries is smaller, and when the overall number of entries surviving with your needed outcome is smaller.
Pool size impacts risk in the following major ways:
- In pools with few entries remaining, the relative impact of your pick has more of an adverse effect on EV, particularly with an unpopular choice
- With a higher expected pot share when fewer entries remain, your relative risk is higher with a loss
- Because future value is less important in smaller pools, you do not have to take as many risks to save strong teams for later
Strategy Can Change Based on Weekly Results
Up until now, we’ve been largely talking about pool size in relation to the number of entries when the contest begins. But every year is different, and survival rates can shift dramatically based on early results — changing the strategy for those who survive.
The 2024 season was an extreme example of early carnage. The most popular pick lost in each of the first three weeks, and four of the first five. It started with Cincinnati losing to New England in Week 1, and continued with upsets like Las Vegas over Baltimore in Week 2, and Denver over Tampa Bay in Week 3. By the end of Week 3, less than 5% of all entries were still alive — a number that historically isn’t reached until around Week 9 or 10.
The 2025 season showed the opposite pattern. Survival held at 90% through Week 1 and 85% through Week 2 as popular picks came through cleanly — and for entries in larger pools, that was a signal to place even more emphasis on saving strong teams for later weeks than usual. Then a wave of upsets in Weeks 3 through 5, led by Arizona going down as the most popular pick in Week 5, brought survival right back to the historical norm by Week 10. Entries that had started adjusting their future value thinking based on the high early survival rate had to recalibrate just as quickly.
In both cases, an entry that ignored what was actually happening and stuck rigidly to its opening strategy was at a disadvantage. An entry that continues with the same strategy as the outset of the season — regardless of what has actually happened — is at a disadvantage. If a pool is thinning faster than expected, the later weeks become relatively less likely to matter. If entries are surviving at an unusually high rate, the opposite is true.
