How Often Does the Safest NFL Survivor Pick of the Week Lose?

Here's when taking the safest possible NFL survivor pick each week knocked you out of survivor pools in recent years. You may be surprised.

There is no such thing as a lock in the NFL.

Even the biggest NFL favorites lose sometimes. In 2018, for example, Minnesota was favored by 16.5 points over Buffalo in Week 3. In the 16 NFL seasons preceding 2018, there had only been 22 games with a favorite that big, out of over 4,000 total games played. Those favorites went 22-0.

Lo and behold, the Vikings lost. As a result, nearly 60% of still-alive survivor pool players who took “mortal lock” Minnesota that week were eliminated from their pools.

In short, there is always a chance that the safest team of each week loses, and based on the historical numbers, picking the safest team each week may not get you nearly as far as you think it would in your NFL survivor pool.

Below is a summary of data from 11 recent NFL seasons (2014-2024). The tables show the team with the highest win odds each week and its game result.

Observations and Notes

The overall winning percentage of the safest team of the week was 164-31 (84.1%).
As you would expect, performance varied from year to year. None lost in 2014; five did in 2017.

Survivor pick popularity for the safest team goes down drastically throughout the season, since most players tend to “burn” the best teams early on:

Over the season’s first seven weeks, 17% of the safest picks had a pick percentage of 15% or lower, and 52% had a pick percentage of 30% or higher.
After the first seven weeks, 48% of the safest picks had a pick percentage of 15% or lower, and 25% had a pick percentage of 30% or higher.

That means the safest pick of the week was about three times more likely to be picked by 15% or fewer of pool participants in Week 8 or later, and the safest pick was more than twice as likely to have a popularity of over 30% in the early weeks.

If you plan ahead wisely, you can really gain an advantage over your survivor pool opponents in the later weeks.
