Week 1 NFL Survivor Picks Strategy & Advice (2026)

Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season will likely come down to decisions about the Chargers, Jaguars, and Lions in NFL survivor pools.

The 2026 Week 1 is fast approaching and we now have less than a week until the opening kickoff, which starts with the Super Bowl rematch between Seattle and New England on Wednesday, September 9.

Our 2026 NFL Survivor Picks product is live and you can access all the tools. That includes our pick popularity projections and future value modeling for every week of the season, along with our Optimal Path and Season Planner tools.

Week 1 Sunday Survivor Overview

As we head into Sunday morning, things have settled down from what was a wild few days with key line movement and popularity shifts.

Here is where are picks and the public are ending up, on any team included in our picks and any others over 1.0% expected popularity.

• The Jaguars have maintained as our most common recommendation, while Pittsburgh has continued to move up as more people update their picks.
• The Chargers have moved down some, mainly due to the improved odds for Pittsburgh making them a more attractive option.
• Pittsburgh is more prevalent in specialty rules pools with strikes, buybacks, and multiple pick weeks.
• About 77% of our pick recommendations are on one of the top three teams.
• The Jets do sneak in on a few entries, all in rebuy pools and mostly with other specialty rules like extending into playoffs and/or multiple pick weeks.

We now have a popularity projections tool, and if you look along the top of each week, you can see the expected elimination rate for the week. That is showing 26.4% right now. The flip side of that is a 73.6% expected survival rate.

The PoolGenius expected survival rate is 74.0% based on our model odds and 76.0% based on market odds.

Friday 9/11

Week 1 Survivor Strategy Breakdown

Well, it’s been a week. After a slow month of August where little changed in regard to the Week 1 outlook, we’ve now seen it get shaken up continually with injury news over the last few days.

Since Monday we have:

• Seen the gap between the Chargers and Jaguars close at the top, with the Chargers dropping to -9.5 and the Jaguars moving up to -8.5.
• Got news that Raiders TE Brock Bowers is out, which dropped one of the expected low future value teams down in the win odds, and reducing their expected popularity.
• Seen the Pittsburgh Steelers rise quickly from a -3 at the start of the week to -6 today with the news that Tua Tagovailoa will now miss the game with an oblique injury. That means Cooper Rush will now start for Atlanta, with Michael Penix also not ready yet. That makes the Steelers the clear 4th team by odds this week and a viable alternative to the top three options, likely causing a shakeup of the distribution of picks.

On that latter point, the Steelers popularity is very much a moving target, and the current data coming in from some sites is a lagging indicator. They are increasing in popularity, but nowhere near as fast as we expect and we think is actually going to happen, especially in sharper and higher money pools where a higher percentage of people are more tuned in to the changing news.
