Is it time to Pony up and use SMU in survivor?
Week 5 gives College Football Survivor players plenty of choices, but not quite the same type of choices we saw earlier in the season.
Only four eligible Power 4 teams plus Notre Dame currently have win odds above 90%. After that, there is a deep group of teams in the 80% range that have relatively little Future Value.
That creates several different ways to approach this week.
You can prioritize safety with Georgia or Indiana. You can preserve more Future Value with teams such as SMU, Kansas, Nebraska, or Wake Forest. And if you’re managing multiple entries, there are enough viable options further down the board to diversify without having to reach for extremely risky picks.
The question is how much safety you’re willing to sacrifice to preserve teams for later.

Week 5 Pick Analysis
SMU: The Best Combination of Safety and Future Value
SMU stands out as one of our favorite Week 5 Survivor picks.
The Mustangs have 91.5% win odds against Boston College, making them one of only four eligible teams currently above 90%.
More importantly, SMU has fallen all the way to No. 32 in our Future Value rankings.
That combination is difficult to ignore.
Georgia, Indiana and Notre Dame provide more immediate safety, but all three carry considerably more Future Value. SMU allows you to stay above 90% this week without spending one of the teams we expect to be significantly more useful later.
That’s exactly the type of tradeoff we’ve been looking for throughout the early part of the season. We did use them a fair bit last week at high odds, but feel free to fire more entries there way this week if you still have them.
Kansas, Nebraska, and Wake Forest Give Us More Low-Future-Value Options
If you’re willing to move below 90%, Week 5 offers several other attractive ways to preserve your premium teams.
Kansas has 88.7% win odds against Middle Tennessee and currently has no meaningful positive Future Value in our model.
That makes the Jayhawks one of the week’s most straightforward use-it-when-you-can options. You sacrifice a few percentage points of safety compared with SMU, but there is very little opportunity cost.
Nebraska follows a similar pattern.
The Cornhuskers have 85.3% win odds against Maryland and rank only No. 42 in Future Value. Again, the immediate risk is higher, but there isn’t much reason to preserve Nebraska for later.
Wake Forest has 84.6% win odds against Stanford and also has no meaningful Future Value.
Those three teams give Survivor players a useful middle tier this week. None is as safe as Georgia, Indiana, or SMU, but all allow you to preserve most of the teams that project to matter later in the season.
Indiana’s Future Value Has Fallen Enough to Use Them
Indiana is an interesting alternative for players who want more safety.
The Hoosiers have 93.9% win odds at Rutgers, the second-highest mark among our eligible Week 5 teams.
Earlier in the season, we were more reluctant to spend Indiana because of their projected Future Value. That’s less of a concern now, because a chunk of that value was tied up in playing Northwestern last week and Rutgers this week, and the future has become at least partially now.
Indiana has fallen to No. 12 in our updated Future Value rankings.
There is still an opportunity cost to using them, particularly compared with SMU, Kansas, Nebraska, or Wake Forest. But the gap is no longer large enough that we think Indiana needs to be treated as an automatic save.
For players with multiple entries, Indiana also provides a good way to diversify away from SMU and the lower-FV choices while increasing immediate safety.
Should You Use Georgia or Save Them for Later?
Georgia presents the most interesting Future Value decision of Week 5.
The Bulldogs have 96.6% win odds against Vanderbilt, the best mark among our eligible teams.
They also rank No. 4 in Future Value.
Normally, that would push us toward saving them. But as we move deeper into the season and the number of extremely safe options begins to decline, there is a stronger argument for actually spending some of the Future Value we’ve accumulated.
Georgia’s future schedule shows why this isn’t an easy decision.
Some of their key projected spots include:
- Week 7 vs. Auburn — 93.0%
- Week 11 vs. Missouri — 93.3%
- Week 12 at South Carolina — 88.2%
- Week 13 vs. Georgia Tech — 99.2%
Week 13 is clearly a premium spot, and Georgia could also be very useful in Weeks 7 and 11.
But your own team availability should play a major role in this decision.
Week 7, in particular, is a week where Georgia could become important. The current top options include:
- Miami vs. Florida State — 96.2%
- Georgia vs. Auburn — 93.0%
- Pittsburgh at Boston College — 92.7%
- Utah at Colorado — 92.0%
- Oregon vs. Nebraska — 88.2%
If you still have Miami, Pittsburgh, Utah, and Oregon available, using Georgia becomes much easier to justify this week. You have several strong alternatives available in Week 7, so spending Georgia at 96.6% doesn’t necessarily create a future problem.
If you’ve already used several of those teams, we’d lean more toward saving Georgia. Their 93% Week 7 projection could become considerably more valuable to your specific entry than the overall Future Value ranking suggests.
That’s an important reminder about Future Value: your own Future Value isn’t necessarily the same as the generic ranking. The teams you’ve already used can change the value of the teams you still have available.
More Options for Portfolio Diversity
Players managing larger portfolios don’t have to stop with SMU, Kansas, Nebraska, Wake Forest, or Indiana.
There are several additional teams worth considering.
Texas Tech has 83.3% win odds at Colorado and ranks No. 20 in Future Value. We loved the Red Raiders last week when they provided 99.2% win odds with relatively modest Future Value. This week’s spot obviously isn’t nearly as attractive, but they’re still usable as part of a diversified portfolio.
Texas A&M may be even more interesting from a Future Value perspective.
The Aggies have 81.5% win odds against Arkansas and currently have no meaningful positive Future Value in our model. That makes them another team we can use without sacrificing much future optionality.
Houston sits at 79.6% against UCF with a No. 25 Future Value rank, while USC is at 77.9% against Washington and ranks No. 30.
Illinois, at 75.6% against Purdue, has essentially no Future Value to preserve.
Those are increasingly aggressive choices, but they provide enough alternatives that players with large portfolios can spread exposure without using the same two or three teams everywhere.
We Don’t Need to Get Too Aggressive
The depth of the Week 5 board also means we don’t see much reason to reach substantially beyond that group.
Once you get below USC and Illinois, the win probabilities fall into the 60s.
At that point, you’re accepting roughly a one-in-three chance of elimination simply to preserve teams for later.
There may eventually be weeks where circumstances force that type of decision. Week 5 isn’t one of them.
With SMU above 90%, Kansas near 89%, Nebraska and Wake Forest around 85%, plus Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Houston, USC and Illinois further down the board, there are enough low-to-moderate Future Value options available.
The Premium Teams Are Becoming More Justifiable
The broader strategic change in Week 5 is that we’re getting closer to the point where using a premium team can make sense.
Notre Dame is No. 1 in Future Value, Miami is No. 2, Georgia is No. 4, and Ohio State is No. 6.
Notre Dame and Miami are relatively easy saves this week. Notre Dame’s 91.3% odds are actually lower than SMU’s despite carrying dramatically more Future Value, while Miami is below 90% at Clemson.
Ohio State also requires taking more current risk at 82.6% at Iowa, despite carrying substantial Future Value.
Georgia is different because the Bulldogs actually provide something the lower-FV options cannot: 96.6% win odds.
We’ve spent the opening weeks emphasizing the value of preserving premium teams when comparable lower-FV options exist. But the purpose of saving those teams was to have them available when they could materially improve our chances of surviving.
We’re beginning to reach that point.
If your future options remain strong, using Georgia now is defensible. If your Week 7 choices are already thinning out, we’d rather preserve them and turn to the deep group of alternatives available this week.
Week 5 Conference-Only Survivor Picks
Conference-only pools make the differences in team availability even more important, particularly now that several obvious early-season options have already been used.
ACC: SMU
SMU is the clear starting point in the ACC.
The Mustangs have 91.5% win odds against Boston College while ranking only No. 32 in Future Value.
That’s especially attractive when compared with Miami. The Hurricanes carry the No. 2 Future Value ranking but have lower current win odds at Clemson.
Wake Forest at 84.6% against Stanford provides an excellent lower-FV alternative, particularly for players who have already used SMU.
For larger portfolios, Wake gives us another way to preserve Miami and other premium ACC options without taking extreme risk.
Big 12: Kansas
Kansas provides the Big 12’s best combination of current safety and Future Value.
The Jayhawks have 88.7% win odds against Middle Tennessee and essentially no projected Future Value.
That’s exactly the type of team we want to use when the opportunity presents itself.
Texas Tech at 83.3% and Texas A&M at 81.5% provide additional options depending on the eligibility rules of your pool, while Houston at 79.6% gives us another potential diversification choice.
Big Ten: Indiana, With Nebraska as the FV Play
The Big Ten presents a straightforward safety-versus-Future-Value choice.
Indiana has 93.9% win odds at Rutgers, easily the best immediate option. Their Future Value has also fallen to No. 12, making us more comfortable using them than we were earlier in the season.
Nebraska, however, offers the more Future-Value-conscious approach.
The Cornhuskers have 85.3% win odds against Maryland but rank only No. 42 in Future Value.
Players prioritizing immediate survival can use Indiana. Players willing to accept some additional risk to preserve future flexibility can turn to Nebraska.
Further down the board, USC at 77.9% and Illinois at 75.6% provide more aggressive alternatives for larger portfolios.
SEC: Georgia or Texas A&M
The SEC provides one of the week’s more interesting strategic choices.
Georgia has the highest win odds on the entire Power 4 plus Notre Dame board at 96.6%, but the Bulldogs rank No. 4 in Future Value.
Whether to use them depends heavily on what you still have available for future weeks, particularly Week 7.
If you still have Miami, Pittsburgh, Utah, Oregon, and other strong future options available, we’re more comfortable taking Georgia’s superior safety now.
If those alternatives have already been used, we’d lean toward preserving Georgia.
Texas A&M at 81.5% against Arkansas provides the lower-Future-Value alternative. The Aggies require accepting considerably more immediate risk, but they don’t carry the same opportunity cost.
That’s a wide safety gap, so the right choice will depend heavily on pool size, your remaining team inventory, and how much risk you’re willing to accept in Week 5.
